Son of James Simpson Collins and Cyena Blaylock. James married Mariah Jane Collins on November 25, 1870. Mariah was the daughter of Major Robert Crume Collins (brother to James Simpson Collins). Therefore Mariah was 1st cousin and wife to James Polk Collins. Mariah was born 12/29/1850 in Greene County, Alabama, and died after 1883 in Montgomery County, Mississippi.

He was a private in the CSA, Robert's Company A, 3rd Battalion Cavalry Reserves. He was received as a Military Prisoner in Alton Illinois on January 17, 1865.

At the age of 4, he moved with his family one mile east of the Winona and Bellefontain and the Bankston and Greensboro Road. He grew up to manhood gaining only a ordinary education, became a member of the Baptist Church. He was a Tanner by trade, but exhibited ingenuity in mechanical lines.
