Mrs. Beam was born in Spencer, NC, on September 14, 1914 a daughter of the late Joel Pratt and Carrie Pope Brawley.
She attended Mooresville Public School, Elon College and graduated from Appalachian State University, where she go her teaching certificate. She taught for 9 years at Northbrook. She believed education to be very important, so at the age of 50, she went back to Appalachian to receive her B.S. degree. Mrs. Beam was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church where she was active in the choir, the Mae Harrelson Sunday school class and the Ida Wright Circle.
Mrs. Beam enjoyed playing the piano and organ, traveling to other countries and 48 of the United States, and being a Girl Scout leader. She was a member of the Cherryville Garden Club and the DAR for many years.
Lena Sue Beam and her late husband, C. Grier Beam where major benefactors to Gaston College and Brevard College, where the nursing building and a dormitory are named after her.
In addition to her parents and her husband she was preceded in death by a grandson, Charlie Beam, a brother Henry Brawley, and two sisters Cora Lee Sloan and Dorothy Brawley.
Survivors include her daughter, Linda Beam and her husband Michael of Cherryville, son, Joel Vincent Beam of Cherryville, granddaughter M'shel Beam Bowen and husband Ken of Cherryville, two great grandchildren, Mitchell and Meredith Bowen, and a sister Helen Gillespie of Harrisonburg, VA.
Burial to follow in the City Memorial Cemetery.
