For nine seasons (1954 to 1962), he played at the defensive end position in the National Football League with the Chicago/St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions. Born Leo Tateusz Sugar, he attended Northern High School in Michigan and played collegiate football at Purdue University where he achieved All-American honors. Selected by the Chicago Cardinals during the 11th round of the 1952 NFL Draft, he served with the United States Army prior to beginning his professional football career. He played in 104 regular season games and distinguished himself when he achieved Pro-Bowl honors twice (1958 and 1960).
