James "Jim" Hoynes, 79, of Bismarck passed away on September 19, 2020, in Mayo Hospital in Rochester MN.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday September 25, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Ascension Catholic Church with Msgr Jim Braaten as celebrant. A Livestream of the Service will be available on the Bismarck Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Bismarck Funeral Home with a Rosary/Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.
Jim was born on January 9, 1941 to Russell and Lena (Tuchscherer) Hoynes in Towner, ND, at the family home. He was the youngest of six children. Jim graduated from Towner High School in 1959 where he loved playing basketball and also threw discuss in track. After high school he dedicated 4 years of service to the US Airforce from 1959-1963. He returned home from service and soon after started dating Monica and they married on July 1st, 1965. They made their first home in Minot, ND, where they started their family in 1970 with the birth of Michele. Mary, Jamie and Andrea came in the next few years. In 1983 the family moved to Bismarck and Becky was born a few months later. Jim worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for 39 years and retired in 2002. Throughout his life, he stayed active with fishing, hunting, all kinds of electronic gadgets, carpentry, bowling, golfing, and all sporting activities both playing himself or helping coach his kids. His bowling career was impressive with bowling two 300 games, participating in tournaments televised live and he was also inducted into North Hill Bowl's Hall of Fame in 1984. Jim and Monica bowled on a couple's league for many years. In his retirement years, he spent many hours on the golf course. The most important part of Jim's life was family. Jim and Monica felt it very important to take a family vacation every year. This tradition continued as the family grew. He especially loved family cruises where he had endless buffets and ice cream. Everyone who knew him, knows how much he loved ice cream! Another family treasure is spending weekends at the lake with all his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed playing Norwegian golf, horseshoes, staying out of the sun, and relaxing by the bonfire at night. Jim's battle with cancer spanned over 18 years. The doctors at Mayo nick named him the Miracle Man because he kept beating the odds. Jim was the best husband, dad and grandpa and he will be greatly missed by many.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Monica of Bismarck; five children, Michele (Patrick) Bitz of Bismarck, Mary (Cory) Kaufman of Bismarck, Jamie (Lisa) Hoynes of Bismarck, Andrea (Keith) Haider of Bismarck, Becky Hoynes of Fargo; 18 grandchildren; one great grandson; one sister, Carolyn Aubol of Las Vegas NV; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clarence and Francis; sisters, Mary Lou and Cecilia; and nephew, Fr. Richard Hoynes.
The 19 carnations "the flower of love" on Jim's casket are in honor of Jim's grandchildren and great grandson.
