"Waterloo, Oct. 30 — The body of Lieut. Frederick Strayer Chappelle, 36, who was injured fatally last Tuesday when the U. S. S. Chicago was rammed by a British freighter off the California coast, arrived in Waterloo this afternoon. It was taken to 46 West Main Street. Military rites at the church and at Maple Grove Cemetery will be in charge of Warner-VanRiper Post, American Legion. A firing squad from Company B, National Guard of Geneva will assist in the service. Lieutenant Chappelle's body was accompanied here by his widow, Mrs. Marion Boyes Chappelle, and his father, George W. Chappelle of 4 Church Street, Waterloo, who had been visiting Lieutenant and Mrs. Chappelle in San Pedro, California." (Oct. 31, 1933, The Rochester Democrat, NY)

"On 24 October 1933, the USS Chicago collided with the British freighter Silver Palm in dense fog off Point Sur, California. Three officers aboard Chicago were killed in their quarters during the collision, and an enlisted man's arm had to be amputated as well. Silver Palm penetrated around 18 feet into the cruiser's port bow, forward of the Number 1 gun mount." (wikipedia)
