Mrs. Simon K Menning (nee Minnie DeVries), daughter of Evert and Jane DeVries, was born at Pella, Iowa, November 4, 1881. At the age of five she moved with her family to Douglas County, South Dakota.
She made confession of her faith in Christ her Savior in 1905 in the Grandview Reformed Church.
On March 8, 1906 she was united in marriage to Simon K Menning. They had the privilege of celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in 1966. This union was blessed with nine children; Clarence S, Jennie (Mrs Fred Ligtenberg), Evert, Viola (Mrs Marion VandenHoek), Lloyd, Arthur, Grace (Mrs Lyle Groen), Pearl (Mrs Raymond Brink), and Lucille (Mrs Junior Noteboom), all of whom live in the Corsica community.
She moved with her husband from the farm to Corsica in 1945. At that time, her membership was transferred to the Grace Reformed Church in Corsica. She remained a faithful member until the time of her death.
She passed away on September 20,1966 in the Methodist Hospital in Mitchell, South Dakota, at the age of 84 years,10 months and 16 days. She had been in the hospital 5 weeks flowing surgery an suffered complications.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
She leaves to mourn: her husband, nine children; 33 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by 2 brothers, Herman of Corsica and John of Lynden, Washington and 3 sisters: Aggie (Mrs Hahn VanderWerff) and Kate (Mrs Henry Korevaar) of Lynden, Washington, and Jennie ( Mrs John Bobeldyk) of Corsica and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Clement's Funeral Chapel in Corsica and at 2:00 p.m. in the Grace Reformed Church with the Rev. E. Vander Ploeg officiating. Music was furnished Mrs James Beukelman, who sang "All The Way My Savior Leads Me" and "Safe In The Arms of Jesus", Mrs Marion Plooster was organist.
Pallbearers were six grandsons: LeRoy Ligtenberg, Loren Menning, Darrell Menning, Richard VandenHoek, Virgil Menning, and Larry Menning. Internment was in Graceland Cemetery in Corsica.
