Obituary:
Simon K. Menning, aged Corsica resident, died Friday at the hospital in Parkston. He had been in failing health the past year.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Clement's Funeral Chapel in Corsica and at 2:00 p.m. in the Grace Reformed Church with the Rev. John Brouwer officiating. Music was furnished by the Harmony Four, who sang "In That Beautiful Land" and "Some Golden Daybreak", Mrs Marion Plooster was organist.
Pallbearers were six grandsons: LeRoy Ligtenberg, Loren Menning, Darrell Menning, Richard VandenHoek, Virgil Menning, and Daniel Noteboom. Internment was in Graceland Cemetery in Corsica.
Simon K. Menning was born January 8, 1885 at Alton, Iowa to Mr. an Mrs Klaas Menning, and at an early age moved to Douglas County, South Dakota.
On March 8, 1906 He was united in marriage to Minnie DeVries. To this union nine children were born; Clarence S, Jennie (Mrs Fred Ligtenberg), Evert, Viola (Mrs Marion VandenHoek), Lloyd, Arthur, Grace (Mrs Lyle Groen), Pearl (Mrs Raymond Brink), and Lucille (Mrs Junior Noteboom), all of whom live in the Corsica community.
Mr Menning was engaged in farming the major part of his life. Upon retirement in 1945, he and his wife moved from the farm to Corsica. His wife preceded him in death on September 20, 1966.
He made confession of faith at an early age, and served on the consistory of the Grandview Reformed Church for many years. Upon moving to Corsica, his membership was
transferred to the Grace Reformed Church.
He passed away on October 31, 1969 in the Parkston hospital at the age of 84 years,9 months and 23 days.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his nine children; one sister, Mrs Hattie Vreeman, 33 grandchildren, and 45 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Two brothers and 7 sisters preceded him in death.
