Arabella Gaines (also called "Addie" Gaines) is on a list of "Missionaries and Teachers" of the American Missionary Society for 1868-9. She never married. Her health seems to have been fragile: she is mentioned in the newspapers as suffering serious illnesses in 1887, 1888, and 1890.

Arabella Gaines swore out a will on February 7, 1903, two days before she died. The first bequest, of $1,000 and all her household furniture except her trunk, was to Martha Rickman (Memorial # 220246325) in consideration of "many services and acts of kindness ... covering a period of more than the last 10 years." Smaller bequests are made to "my beloved cousin Luetta Wilson of Chicago," and "my beloved brother Morris Gaines of London, England." "My old friend Julia Roots" was appointed executor.
