Chris David Baker, 61, of Ottumwa, died at 6:12 p.m. April 22, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born November 21, 1956 in Kansas City, KS to Raymond Dean and Betty Arlene Covert Baker. He married Susan Gail on April 5, 1993.
Chris was a 1975 graduate of Ottumwa High School and earned a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Iowa School of Journalism. He had worked as a photographer for a newspaper in Idaho and lived in California for a short time before returning to Iowa to finish his degree. He taught photography at Indian Hills Community College. Chris worked for the Iowa Peace Institute in Grinnell involved in conflict resolution and for the Department of Corrections 8th Judicial District. Chris was a wonderful photographer, song writer, musician and author. He wrote "In Retrospect, the History of Wapello County" and "Others Had It Worse: Sour Dock, Moonshine and Hard Times in Davis County, Iowa". Chris enjoyed exploring local and family history.
Surviving is his wife, Susan; a son, Miles Baker of Livermore, CA; a brother, Mike Baker of Cedar Rapids and a sister, Kim (Dan) Wilkerson of North Liberty.
He was preceded in death by a son, Henry Gail and his parents, Raymond Baker and Betty Durham.
His body has been cremated and private services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Wilson Elementary Playground Fund. Checks may be made payable to Ottumwa Community School District with Wilson Elementary playground fund in the memo and may be mailed to Wilson Elementary, 1102 E. Fourth St., Ottumwa, IA 52501.
