Dempsey Rudolph Smith was born March 13, 1931, at New, Raleigh County, W.Va., a son of Charles O. (C.O.) Smith Sr. and wife Flora Arthur Smith. Mr. Smith, a resident of Pluto Road, Shady Spring, W.Va., died July 26, 2001, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.
Mr. Smith was a lineman for a Virginia firm, a foreman for Hercules in Covington, Va., and retired from the state of West Virginia. He was a graduate of Richmond High School in Abraham, Raleigh County, W.Va., and attended Beckley College. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran who served four years in Texas and was a member of the DAV.
He and his wife Norma Jean Bailey Smith had two sons and a daughter.
