Ephraim was the son of Thomas Bowen and Sarah Hunt of Rehoboth, Mass. He was married first in Providence, RI on 9 February 1737/8 to Mary Fenner, the daughter of Thomas Fenner and Mary Abbott. Following Mary's death he was married in Providence on 10 June 1746 to Lydia Mawney, the daughter of Col. Peter Mawney and Mary Tillinghast. Ephraim was a physician, or "practitioner of physick" as styled in the early records. Ephraim had three children with his first wife and eleven more with his second:
