Troy Everett Lewis, life-long resident of Midlothian, passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior early Thursday morning, June 25, 2020, just 40 days shy of his ninety-second birthday.
Troy was born to Don A. and Wilna Few Lewis on August 5, 1928, near the Valley Cemetery between Midlothian and Cedar Hill. At approximately the age of 10, Troy moved with his parents and 2 older siblings to the farm home of his grandparents, who had purchased the property in 1892.
He attended all eleven years of school (all that was offered at that time) in Midlothian, graduating in 1945. Two days later, he enrolled at NTAC (now UTA) where he attended for a year and a half until his enlistment in the Army, December 1946. He served as a member of the Military Police on Governor’s Island, New York, until his honorable discharge in August, 1948. In the fall of 1949, Troy enrolled at Texas Tech University where he attended until December, 1950, when it became incumbent upon him to return to Midlothian to help run the family farm.
Troy married Patricia Ganaway on August 4, 1951, in the Midlothian Methodist Church where they attended, raised their children and served faithfully as a couple all of their 68+ years of marriage. Years later it became a matter of family amusement that the date of Troy and Pat’s marriage was the hottest day on record in north Texas at 107 degrees. The wedding reception was held in the home of Pat’s parents, Ben and Evelyn Ganaway, at Mountain Peak. Of course, there was no air conditioning back then and it was soon discovered that there was not nearly enough ice for even a second cold drink of water for the attendees. Nowadays Troy and Pat’s grandkids consider those stories one of “DeDad’s” tall tales of the olden days, but is worth stating that August 4, 1951 actually still holds that dubious distinction. Another of DeDad’s tales to his kids and grandkids was that their Mom/Grandmom was his “ticket’ off that hardscrabble farm. In his words, “I’m never going back.” Ultimately, to the profound gratitude of all, that was a promise he could not keep. Today, Kim, Keri & Bob and Leigh & Billy very much enjoy living on the family farm.
Into the home of Troy and Pat was born L. Kim in 1953 and Keri Kay in 1956. Kim and Keri grew up entirely in Midlothian, a place that rarely touted a population over 1,500 back then. It was a great place to grow up.
Troy retired from Texas Industries (Midlothian cement plant) in 1981 after twenty year’s service, then later retired from Bearings, Inc. after nine years.
He filled his retirement years with fun times with Keri and Bobby’s kids and grandkids, antique tractor shows with Kim and numerous “vacations” with Pat to various Bed and Breakfasts in Fredericksburg. Remarkably, he also learned to actually enjoy raising cattle & goats and hay/wheat farming in which he was daily involved through his 90th year.
Troy is survived by wife Patricia, son L. Kim, daughter and son-in-law Keri and Bob Emerson; grandchildren Leigh & Billy Fields, Jake and Megan Emerson, Sam and Emily Emerson and 8 great-grandchildren (and one more only days away). His sister-in-law John Ann Lewis, numerous nieces and nephews and great host of friends also survive.
Troy was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lezette McReynolds, brother Don A. Lewis, Jr, and granddaughter Katie Lauren Emerson.

A brief graveside service for family and friends will be held at the Mt. Zion Cemetery, 3211 Mt. Zion Rd, Midlothian, Tx. 76065, on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at 11:00 a.m.
The family will appreciate observance of social distancing and face coverings during the short visiting time after the service.
The body will lie in state at the Midlothian Funeral Home, 200 E. Ave E., Midlothian, Texas, on Monday, June 29, 2020, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. for those who prefer to pay their respects in a more private and safer setting. The casket will be open; however the family will not be present during these hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Troy’s name may be made to the First United Methodist Church Jesus Fund, 800 S. 9th St. Midlothian, Tx. 76065 or Happy Hill Farm, 3846 Highway 144, Granbury, Tx. 76048.
