Vernon and Carrie, both 22 years old, and their children Jack and Vernon are listed in the 1930 census, living in a rented home in Milwaukee at 252 Washington Street. They married when they were both 19, Jack was two, Vernon was under a year old. Vernon Sr was a shovel operator in the excavation industry with no schooling past elementary.
The 1940 census list both Vernon and Carrie, children Jack aged 12, Vernon 10, Joyce 8, Theodore 6, Mildred 4 and Elsa 2, along with Paul Wentz 23 and daughter Elizabeth Doxtater Wentz 22 and their daughter, Diann, aged 1. They lived in a rented home at 420 South Tenth, Milwaukee and Vernon was a hoist engineer who completed 6th grade. Carrie completed 7th grade.
