Although historian H.H. Bancroft had mentioned him in his voluminous California state histories, J.J. Vallejo, along with his brother Antonio J. Vallejo, were among the overlooked members of the prominent Vallejo family of colonial Spanish California. His wife was Soledad Sanchez, and they had two daughters: Guadalupe Vallejo and Teresa Vallejo.

"Jose J. Vallejo, 82 years of age, residing at the Mission San Jose for many years, has removed with his family to Salinas City. The Rancho El Valle de San Jose, which embraced the lands from the Warm Springs to within a short distance of Haywards, and from the Highland to the bay, was once the property of Vallejo. This domain is now the home of thousands, while Mr. Vallejo is almost penniless, like many of the native Californians who were once extensive landowners. --San Francisco Examiner, June 13, 1881

Jose had died at Salinas, aged 84 years, from pneumonia. He had been a resident of Mission San Jose since 1838, and was reportedly visiting his daughter in Salinas when he succumbed.
