Corporal Ignacio Vicente Ferrer Vallejo y Gómez was born at Hacienda de Cañadas, Guadalajara, Jalisco, New Spain (México) in 1754. He was the son of Geronimo Vallejo y [?] and Antonia Gómez y [?]. As a young man he enlisted for 10 years as a "soldado de cuera" ("leather jacket") in Spain's frontier militia and was posted to the Presidio of San Diego (1775 Alta California Census). At some point he re-enlisted for 10 years, was promoted to cabo (corporal) and posted to the Presidio of Monterey (1790 Alta California Census). While detailed to the Presidio of Santa Bárbara he married María Antonia Isabela Lugo y Martínez in the Presidio Chapel February 18, 1791 (BP Marriage 00009). He returned to Monterey and retired as a sargento (sergeant). Ignacio Vicente Vallejo y Gómez was buried in the old Presidio (San Carlos) Chapel Cemetery May 11, 1832 (SC Burial 02812).
