María Paula Rosalia Vallejo y Lugo was born to sargento Ignacio Vicente Ferrer Vallejo (1748-1832) and María Antonia Isabela Lugo y Martínez (1776-1855). She was born at Monterey, Alta California, and baptized at the Presidio Chapel (San Carlos) February 17, 1811 (SC Baptism 02802). She married Jacob Primer Leese (1809-1892) at Mission San Francisco de Solano April 13, 1837 (SFS Marriage 00320). She became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. She was buried at San Carlos Cemetery July 31.

Mr. Leese, upon a hasty courtship—or rather, for he seems to have had no time to wait, and California was beginning to shake off her lethargy and be a go-ahead country; in fact, none beyond "popping the question," in smart business fashion, on the 1st of April, 1837 (ominous day for such a deed!)—was married to a sister of General Vallejo. On the 7th of the same month they were tied together, for life, by the "holy bands of matrimony;"

1838, a daughter was born to them and given her mother's name. Rosalie Reese Leese was the first white child born in San Francisco. She lived, however, only a short time, and a younger daughter was given the name.
