Atlanta Constitution - 22 Apr 1995 -- G. F. Steele's father was Dr. J.R.Peters.

The funeral for Garland F Steele of Atlanta, an engineer for the city of Atlanta during Mayor William B Hartsfield's administration and an Army veteran, was Tuesday at H M Patterson & Son, Spring Hill, with burial in Arlington Memorial Park.

Mr Steele, 95, died April 16.

A 50-year member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Mr. Steele helped with the planning of rights of ways for expressways running through the city.

Surviving are his wife, Jane Steele; two children, Frances S Dover of Norcross and John E Steele of Loganville; Daughter-in-law, Jean Steele, nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
His Mother chose to ignore his rightful name, raising him with her own last name, after her divorce from Dr. Peters. Whether it was ever changed legally, I don't know, but back then, there were less regulations, maybe.
