Elizabeth was a very beloved only child. The day that she turned 14 years old, her father died from a heart attack.

She and Garland Fredrick Steele eloped, marrying on Christmas Day, 1927.Elizabeth was then a senior at Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga. They had one child, Garland Fredrick Steele, Jr., born on Oct. 27, 1929

Like her mother, she became a teacher, finishing her undergraduate degree and receiving a master's degree from Oglethorpe University. She was the principal of her school when she had to leave due to debilitating health: Some time earlier, she had an auto accident which gave her a minor head injury (so they thought). Brain surgery was attempted, but it wasn't successful and she died in a few days.

It was often said by those who truly knew her that she treated all people with respect, whatever their circumstances or color. Elizabeth passed That characteristic down to her son, my husband. who also never met a person that he couldn't see as a friend.
