Raymond Hughes. Funeral Services for Raymond Hughes, 81, of Palatine, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003 at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3201 Meadows Drive, Rolling Meadows, IL, The Reverend Robert Giese will officiate. Born Sept. 23, 1922 in Scranton, PA. He was under the constant care of his beloved family. Interment will be at St. Michael Cemetery, Palatine, IL. Raymond was the son of Johnathon and Margaret Hughes. He enlisted in the Army in December, 1942. Raymond married Eileen Lynch on June 13, 1943 in Salina, Kansas, where he was stationed in the service before going overseas during World War II. Raymond was a Platoon Sargeant holding the rank of Sargeant E6 Staff Sargeant. He was with K Company in the 302nd Infantry Regiment 1st Platoon, 94th Infantry Division. The 1st Platoon of the 94th Infantry Division participated in the Battle of Northern France, Battle of Ardennes-Alsace, Battle of Rhineland and the Battle of Central Europe. The 94th Division was the first allied unit to break through the Seigfried Line, the main German defense position. Raymond was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions in Nennig over a three day period in January of 1945 during which time he saved the lives of the men in his platoon. He also received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, European, African, Middle Eastern Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, the Combart Infantry Badge and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He was an active and proud member of the 94th Infantry Division Association, having served in the positions of President and Secretary. In 1955 Raymond and Eileen moved their growing family to Palatine where he remained for 48 years. He was a good neighbor and friend to many. Raymond was an example of all things true, good and honorable. Raymond was a Vice President in the Insurance Industry for many years. He also worked as the Warehouse Manager for Quill Corporation, where he was well known and respected, and from which he retired in 1992. Military honors and career mentions aside, Raymond's most proud accomplishment was his family. He was the loving husband of the late Eileen, nee Lynch, Hughes, with whom he had 11 children, Raymond (Paula), Richard, Denise (Stan), Russell, Robert (Cindy), Randy (Janet), Deirdre (Thomas) Powers, Diane (Joe) Keating, Dorice (Mike), Rory (Diana) and Dorothy. He was beloved Pop Pop of 21 grandchildren, Jonathan (Melissa), Victoria, Joey, Maggie, Tom (Renae), Annie (Roy), Beth (Javier), Chris, Steve, Dan, Maggie, Hillary, Quentin, J.T., Charlie, Joey, Stephanie, Alison, Emily, Alex and Katie. He also had two great-grandchildren, Daniel and Robyn. He is also survived by his special lady friend, Jadwiga; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Julie and Patsy Verbeeck; and nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, 2003 and 9 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Hwy., Palatine. Memorials may be made to the family for donation to ''The 94 Attack'', the official publication of the 94th Infantry Division Association to assure its continued publication.
