NOTE: Birth year estimated.

Officially drowned in a creek at Miki Miki while suffering a fit. But a prisoner named Robert Douglas, who was an 18-year-old employee of the Pains at the time of her death, caused a sensation the following year when he claimed to have murdered her. Mrs. Pain's body was exhumed and her head removed for examination, but there was no indication of foul play.

A MIKI MIKI MYSTERY.
MRS S. PAIN FOUND DEAD.
Mrs Susannah Pain, of Miki Miki, was found dead on her property on Sunday morning. It appears the deceased went out with a young man named Douglas, who was working on the premises, to master stock. The two were about a quarter of a mile from the homestead when the deceased told Douglas to go home and attend to some cows.

As the deceased did not arrive home, late in the evening a search was made for her, but without avail. On Sunday morning the search was continued and the body of the unfortunate woman was found in a gully, in an opposite direction to where it was supposed she was last seen.

Mrs Pain was about forty-five years of age, and, it is said she was subject to fits. She was in Dr Butement's hands about eighteen months ago, undergoing treatment for colic. The intelligence that the woman was lost was brought in to the Masterton police last evening by a son of the deceased. Another son was in Masterton this morning with the news that the body had been found. Sergeant O'Malley and Constable Warneford have gone out to prosecute enquiries, and Mr Thos. Duncan, J.P., as Acting Coroner has also gone to hold an inquest. It is likely that a post mortem examination of the body will be made by Dr Butement, who proceeds to the Miki Miki with the police and Acting Coroner.

The late Mrs Pain was the wife of Mr Edward Pain and sister to Mrs McLaren, of Martinborough. Messrs John Smith (Taratahi) and Moses Smith (Gladstone) are her brothers. (Wairarapa Daily Times, Oct. 24, 1898)
