HIS UNCLE, George Pain of Pain & Kershaw, Martinborough
was born in Wellington in 1846. Parents had migrated to New Zealand on the 'Oriental' in 1840. In 1865, moved to the Wairarapa and worked as a 'travelling salesman'. Built the first store in Martinborough in 1873. Sixteen years later, sold the store to John Gaile only to buy it back several years later in partnership with Thomas Owen Haycock. The store traded under the name 'Pain and Haycock'. In 1899 John William Kershaw was admitted to the partnership and when Haycock retired in 1904, the business became known as 'Pain & Kershaw'. One of his farms was 'Admiral Station'. He also owned 'Clifton Grove' for a time. For a time he owned the Club Hotel, Martinborough.
