Rosanna was the fourth daughter born to parents Furman and Mary McCullough Schellinger of Hopewell, Cumberland Co, New Jersey. Rosanna spent her youth in southern New Jersey but left her ancestral home to marry Charles G Kempton of New Bedford, Massachusetts ca. 1844. After her marriage, she remained in MA, probably never returning to her native New Jersey. Her husband, Charles, joined the Union Army 14 Aug 1862 and was assigned to Co H, 38th Regt. of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He remained with that unit until he died of disease on 25 April 1863, near the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. Before his death, Rosanna and Charles had five children together: William H, Charles M, Warren F, Walter C and Emma F.
Rosanna raised her children in MA and spent her last years living with her son, Charles M, before her death in Foxborough. Rosanna's younger sister, Rebecca Schellinger (1829-1908), also removed to MA, and was noted living with Rosanna's family in 1850. Rebecca eventually married a man from New Bedford, MA and spent the remainder her life there, also.
