Mrs. Rebecca McElroy Denton passed away peacefully at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday evening, March 31, 2020, at home. Rebecca was born in Laurel, MS on June 23, 1930, to Cleveland Sumpter Thornton and Mittie Hughes Thornton.
She is preceded in death by her first husband, Edd McElroy, of Gautier, MS. They met and were married in Laurel, MS. They moved to Biloxi, MS in the late 40’s and opened and operated the Dairy Queen on the beach. They soon moved to Pascagoula and opened a Dairy Queen on Market Street, which later became Edd’s Drive Inn.
Rebecca was a blessed sister to twelve siblings; Ted Thornton, Truitt Thornton, TC Thornton, Bernice Thornton, Walter Thornton, Ruth Boals, Rachel Adcock, Nettie Hughes, Roma Duckworth, Laurie Killingsworth, and Lois Hughes; and two half-siblings, Grace Ratcliffe and Tracy Thornton.
She married Robert R. Denton April 17, 2002. They lived in Clearwater, FL for three years before moving to Foley, AL in 2005. Robert cared for her at home the last five months of her life with loving care and attention.
Along with her parents, Rebecca is preceded in death by all of her siblings with the exception of her half-sibling, Grace Ratcliffe.
She is survived by her loving husband and daughter, Carol McElroy Green and her husband Jacob F. Green, and their son, Richard B. Cannette and his wife Michelle Peden Cannette, and their children, Richard B. Cannette, Jr., Tyler and Taylor Mallette, Alex and Sara Mallette, and Hunter Cannette; great-great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Macie, and Adrianna Cannette, and Tatum Mallette.
Rebecca was a strong-willed and determined lady. She knew how to be a lady but wasn’t scared of hard work.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to AseraCare Hospice, Crystal, Brigetta, Summer, Brook, Debbie, and Dr. Morrar.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice in Rebecca’s memory.
At this time, the services will be private. A Celebration of Life for Mrs. Rebecca will be held at a later date.
