Alexandra Anastasia Hamilton, Duchess of Abercorn, was the eldest daughter of Lt.-Col. Harold Pedro Joseph Phillips and his wife, Georgina Wernher. She was married on October 20, 1966, in Westminster Abbey, to James Hamilton, Marquess of Hamilton, son of James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Abercorn and Lady Mary Katherine Crichton. Her husband, James, succeeded as the 5th Duke of Abercorn in 1979 and they moved into the family seat, Baronscourt Castle, in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

The Duchess of Abercorn was a close friend of the Duke of Edinburgh, and her sister, Natalia, Duchess of Westminster, is a godmother of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.

The Duchess was a descendant of Alexander Pushkin, considered by many to be the greatest Russian poet and the founder of modern Russian literature. She was the founder of the Pushkin Prizes and the Pushkin Trust, promoting art therapy for young people. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2008 for her work with the Pushkin Trust.

The Tyrone Constitution, in an article entitled " Lord Lieutenant leads tributes to the Duchess of Abercorn" (December 12, 2018) stated, "A private funeral service will take place at Baronscourt Parish Church next week with a public memorial service taking place in the Spring."
