"Aunt Burke" was born in Kentucky Nov 10, 1842 and died in Burke, Texas, September 19, 1919. Within this compass is a wonderful history. For thirty years this woman was the wife of a Methodist preacher as he served here in Texas. She invested in this service a rare personality, a brilliant and trained mind and a heart devotion that was inspiring. Since childhood days in Missouri, she had been a member of our Church, so Methodism's history, doctrines, ideals and conquests were a constant joy. She could give "a reason for the faith" that was in her with such clearness as to be compelling. She was a member of a family (the Godbeys) noted for intellectual strength. She was a graduate of Fayette College, Missouri, and being most devout of spirit, one may readily see a unique and useful personality. For nearly fifty years Sister Burke was homemaker, wife and mother. Three of her six sons and the preacher husband went before her to the other land. Two of the boys answered the call to the ministry -- another son, Lee, of Burke, at whose home the old mother spent her last day, is in my judgment one of the truest men I have known. The superannuated father died in this home and then the invalid mother lingered for months and in my lifetime I have not seen more beautiful loyalty or devotion upon the part of a son and his family. It is worth much to have raised and trained such a boy as that. If "Aunt Burke" had made no other contribution to the world, she had lived to great purpose. I marveled often because of the versatility of Sister Burke's mind. She was perfectly "at home" with the great poets and other masters, and unless one had a "speaking acquaintance" with the best it was wisdom to avoid high converse in her presence; but her greatest treasure was the Word. I never could tell which more thrilled her soul, God's promises to his saints or the joy she had in trying to help others to know of the love of Christ. Here was an intelligent understanding of the Book and a devotion to the interests of the Kingdom, which were a ceaseless inspiration to those whom she touched with her influence. "Aunt Burke" you had a hard time, in many ways, but you did your part worthily, you helped many of us more than you know, you "made good" here, and we are sure the good Father will take care of one who was as true as you, so we are glad you are safe, and we hope to see you again.
