Rev Stonewall "Lacy" Burke, born in Cass Co., MO - Son of Rev James Dowen Burke and Emma Louise Smith.

Brother of Edmund D, Rev Dowen Sibley, Arthur Lee, Ewell Buckner and Bascom Burke.

Lacy married, 22 July 1896 in Panola Co., TX, Mary L "Minnie" Hughes, daughter of Rev George Robert Hughes and Susan Rebecca "Sue/Susie" Gary. After the death of Minnie on 6 Dec 1900, Lacy married, 24 Feb 1904, Zara Amanda Knight, a daughter of J F Knight and Nannie C Yeager.

Lacy had 3 children by both wives, 4 of which survived him.

Grandson of Joseph Reyburn Burke & Juliette Gertrude Robinson and Gervas Storrs Smith & Mary Booth Sibley.

Lacy died in Stockdale, Wilson Co., TX.

REV. STONEWALL LACY BURKE

Rev. S. L. Burke, son of Rev. and Mrs. J. D. Burke of Leesville, Texas, was born April 19, 1872, in Cass County, Missouri; moved with his parents to Texas when 7 years old. He remained at home, working on the farm and going to school until about 16. He then obtained a certificate and taught and went to school until he was licensed to preach. He professed religion and joined the Church when quite young. He was a good boy. As a man he was studious and until his strength failed he maintained his industrious habits. He was licensed to preach by the Pittsburg District Conference June 1900, and served two years in the East Texas Conference. When the conferences were united he became a member of the Texas Conference and was appointed to Cameron Circuit. He remained there about six months. His health then failed and he was compelled to give up his work. He went into Western Texas and New Mexico. Returned in the fall seemingly entirely well. After serving Thorndale for one year his health again began to fail. He transferred to the West Texas Conference and was appointed to Sterling City, San Angelo District, which charge he served two years. His health did not improve and he was appointed to Stockdale, where he spent his last year on earth. He was not able to attend the Annual Conference at Yoakum and he was granted a superannuate relation. He was ordained deacon by Bishop Duncan, December 6, 1903, and elder by Bishop W. A. Candler, at Houston, December 1, 1907. He remained at Stockdale until January 17, 1908, when the messenger came and he entered into rest. Brother Burke was married July 21, 1896, to Miss Minnie Hughes, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. G. R. Hughes. She died December 6, 1900, leaving her husband and three little children to mourn her departure. He was married a second time to Miss Bara [Zara] Knight, Feb 24, 1904. This union also resulted in the birth of three children. Two of the children preceded their father to the promised land. He therefore leaves a wife and four children to mourn their loss. Bro. Burke was a good man and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith. He was making rapid progress and continued to develop in spiritual power and preaching ability until the end. His decease is a great loss to the Church. He was not, however, called upon to sorrow as those who have no hope, for those who sleep in Jesus, God will bring with him when he comes. Father comfort those who are left behind and be a husband to the widow and a father to the fatherless.
