John served in the US Army during WWII and was Honorably discharged as an Army Corporal. He graduated from the University of Georgia and was a sales engineer for Gulf Oil prior to completing his working life as a sales manager for Bernhardt Furniture. A long-time member of First Baptist Church of Lenoir, he formed enduring friendships with the members of the Beam Sunday School class. In retirement, he enjoyed reading, working outdoors in his garden and fixing things that needed fixing.

Tate and her husband Robert Skaltsas of Cary, NC; granddaughter, Jessica Skaltsas Eaton and husband Derek of Apex, NC; and great-granddaughter, Dylan; one brother-in-law, Harry Singletary and wife Sandra of Fitzgerald, GA; one sister-in-law, Irene Singletary of Denver, CO; and many nieces and nephews. John relished his role as the favorite uncle.
