Exchange Solemn Vows In St. Mary's Catholic Church
Seasonal decorations adorned historic St. Mary's Catholic church when Miss Martha Jane Powers exchanged solemn marriage vows with Mr. Peter R. Hammond. The Rev. Julian J. Schaefer officiated at the double ring ceremony at nine o'clock Wednesday morning, December twenty-sixth. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Powers, 126 West Allen-st., Lancaster. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. P. F. Hammond, 150 East Chestnut-st., Lancaster.
Pews for relatives and close friends were marked with white aisle candles, satin bows and holly. Mrs. Catherine R. Forquer was at the organ console. The Girls Choir sang the Nuptial Mass. During, the offertory, the choir sang "Adeste Fideles".
Given in marriage by her father the bride wore a gown of heavy lustrous white bridal satin. It was designed with a sheer yoke outlined with tiny seed pearls and iridescent sequins. The long fitted sleeves tapered to points over the wrists. The extremely full skirt, worn over hoops extended into a circular train.
The bride's fingertip length veil of pure silk illusion was caught to a Juliet cap of braided illusion with latticed seed pearl crown. She carried a pearl rosary, gift of the bridegroom.
An arm arrangement of Eck's white poinsettias with white satin ribbon streamers was carried by the bride.
Miss Margaret Powers, sister of the bride as maid of honor wore a gown of velveteen in glowing American Beauty shade. Style details included a portrait neckline, cap sleeves and ' full skirt, worn over hoops.
Miss Mary Kay Hammond, sister of the bridegroom as bridesmaid was in velveteen in rich emerald green shade. Both attendants carried silver wreaths with arrangements of Eck's white poinsettias and variegated satin bows in shades of green.
Mr. John Hammond served his brother as best man. Mr. Paul Powers, brother of the bride and Mr. Thomas Hammond, another brother of the bridegroom were ushers.
For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Powers had selected a plum crepe gown accented with a rhinestone pin and earrings. Her accessories were black. Mrs. Hammond was attired in cherry red crepe with white accessories. Both mothers completed their ensembles with a lavender Cattleya orchid.
Breakfast In Hotel
Breakfast in the Pine Room of Hotel Lancaster followed the ceremony. The bridal table was enhanced with holly, white poinsettias and a Lohengrin candle.
A reception took place in the home of the bride's parents. Hostesses were Mrs. Donald Van Horn, Miss Norma Van Horn and Miss Mary E. Shaw, niece of the bride. Each wore a corsage of fragrant Belmont gardenias, tied with silver ribbon.
When the couple left on a wedding trip, with destination not revealed, the bride was wearing a champagne faille dress, black accessories, a tan coat and kolinsky scarf. A purple-throated orchid accented her costume.
The bride was graduated from St. Mary's High School and is employed at Ohio Bell Telephone Co.
The bridegroom also graduated from St. Mary's High School. He now is stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia and will return to camp January second.

Martha Jane Hammond, 89, formerly of Austintown, Ohio, passed away February 22, 2020 at The Inn at Christine Valley.
Martha was born July 17, 1930 in Lancaster, Ohio, the daughter of the late Patrick H. and Ida M. (Roshon) Powers. Martha was a member of St. Christine’s Church and a past member of the Saxon Club. Prior to retirement in 2001, Martha worked as a telephone operator for Ohio Bell, Ketchum Distributors and later retired from the Trumbull County Department of Human Services.
Martha is preceded in death by her husband, Peter Richard Hammond, whom she married December 26, 1951 and died April 6, 2005. She is also preceded in death by eight sisters and two brothers.
Martha is survived by her sons Bruce E. (Teresea), Curtis P. (Sue), and James E. (Kerry); her grandchildren Bruce Jr. (Anna), Joel (Shari), Wendy Blazer (Roland Brooks) Curtis II, Mackenzie and Madison; four great-grandchildren Andrew, Benjamin, Preston and Sloane, a sister-in-law Jean Hammond and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive relatives and friends Saturday, February 29th from 10:30 AM-12:00 PM at St. Christine’s Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 PM at the church. Martha will be laid to rest beside her husband at Resurrection Cemetery.
