British socialite and aristocrat: The Honourable (sometimes referred to as 'Lady') Alice Ormsby-Gore was the youngest daughter of Sir David Ormsby-Gore (later Lord Harlech) and his first wife Sylvia 'Sissie' Lloyd-Thomas. She spent her childhood living between the U.K and America, as her father once was the English Ambassador to the U.S between 1961-1965. Her elder siblings were antiquated with the London hippie scene in the 60's, which gave the young Alice a connection to the rock world. In 1967, her mother died in a car crash which left Alice "extremely sad and inward." The young Alice was fragile, but in late 1968, she was introduced to British rock guitarist Eric Clapton. Clapton recalled in his autobiography that he met Alice through interior designer David Mlinaric who was doing work on Clapton's home, Hurtword Edge, at the time.

The pair announced their engagement to the public on September 7th, 1969 and 'Time' magazine announced that the couple intended to marry on March 16th, 1970, but the marriage never took place and the pair became recluses, addicted to heroin and junk food. Alice held 'an assortment of jobs', from being a model to staring in the Israeli version of the musical 'Hair' . It is also known that Alice and two American musicians, Maureen Grey and Linda Lewis were set to start a ‘girl group’ together with Alice on guitar, but it never happened. Alice lived with Clapton until 1974, often caring for him and going to London to get his heroin supply. Her father intertwined with the couple’s actives and tried to clean up the pair.

While Clapton recovered, Alice remained a lifelong heroin addict and later became an alcoholic. Many tragedies came Alice's way, she found her elder brother, Julian dead in 1974 from an apparent suicide and her father died in a car crash in 1985. The media referred to these deaths as the 'Ormsby Gore curse.' Years later, Eric Clapton had heard that Alice had fallen ill in the Summer of 1994. Clapton arranged plans for his friends to take Alice into an institution to recover, and she finally met up with Clapton in group therapy and according to Clapton, Alice "ranted at me for an hour without stopping, regurgitating all the scenarios from our fractured past with absolute clarity." Alice attended the Priory Hospital, a private mental health institution in South-West London. She then moved to a 'halfway house' in Bournemouth and seem to have been making a recovery. Unfortunately, Alice checked herself out of the institution and moved into a bedsit in Bournemouth, Dorset in which she was found dead on April 8th, 1995. She had died three days previously. Her younger brother, Francis Ormsby-Gore (then the 6th Lord Harlech) identified her body. She was buried in the Harlech family vault on what would've been her 43rd birthday in St. Mary's Churchyard, Shropshire.
