Salt Lake Herald-Republican - 1873-11-07 - A Sad Accident

A SAD ACCIDENT

A Young Man Accidentally Kills A Friend.

. Yesterday morning a shocking ac-
cident occurred on Jordan River, a
short distance below Mrs. Pettit's, by
which a young man named John Mul-
lett was instantly killed by an intimate
friend named William Flint. The
two young men left their homes in the
Sixteenth ward early in the morning,
for the purpose of shooting ducks.
At Pettit's they hired a small boat
and proceeded down the river. Fling
pushing it along from behind with and
oar while Mullet sat in the middle of
the boat, his back toward his friend.
It was the understanding between
them that Mullett would not rise from
his seat lest he should receive the con-
tents of Flint's gun should the latter
shoot in that direction. While in
this position a flock of ducks flew
over and young Flint fired, but at
that moment Mullett arose, just in
time to receive the charge of shot in
the back of his head. The muzzle of
the gun must have been very close as
the whole charge entered the head
making a frightful looking wound
from which the unfortunate victim
died instantly.
...Flint took the boat ashore and im-
mediately proceeded to the nearest
house and told what had happened;
and after the body had been taken to
the residence of a brother in the 16th
ward, Flint came to town and gave
himself in charge of the constable.
---A coroner's jury held an inquest on
the body and returned the following
verdict:
SALT LAKE CITY, TERRITORY OF UTAH.
....An inquisition holden at Salt Lake
City, 13th precinct, on the 6th day of
November, A.D. 1873, at one o'clock
p.m., at the house of C.J. Mullett,
upon the body of John Mullett, there
lying dead, before George J. Taylor,
coroner of said county, by the jury
whose names are hereunto subscribed.
---The said jurors, upon their oaths,
do say that deceased died from a gun-
shot wound from a weapon in the
hands of William Flint, and from
the evidence before us, we believe
it to have been the result of an ac-
cident.
---In Testimony wereof, the said
jurors have hereto set their hands the
day and year aforesaid.
------------THOS, THOMAS, Foreman.
----------------MARK EARNSHAW.
---------------LEVI WOLSTENHOLME.
GEORGE J. TAYLOR Coroner.

---The only witnesses who testified at
the inquest were Flint and a brother
of the deceased, the latter, however,
knew nothing of the circumstances
of the accident. When the sad affair
occurred the young men were alone,
and the only person who knows all of
the facts is Flint. His story is be-
lieved throughout by all, even the
friends and relatives of Mullett not
having the slightest feeling that it
was the result of anything but and ac-
cident. The young gentlemen were
warm friends, had been together
duck-shooting many times and the
mournful affair of yesterday, by
which, through and unlucky fate,
Flint was made to take the life of one
to whom he was so warmly attached,
bears heavily on his mind. However,
no blame can be attached to him, ex-
cept probably for carelessness.
--- He was taken before the police
justice and was immediately discharg-
ed, there being no evidence to show
that the deed was the result of any-
thing but an accident.
--Both of the young men have rela-
tives in this city, where they have
resided for a number of years, and
the sad occurrence was a severe blow
to all.
