Cullen Houghland

Cullen Houghland was born on a farm near Pinckneyville, February 12, 1862, where he grew to young manhood. He was united in marriage to Ella Galbraith on December 13, 1880. To this marriage seven children were born. Two of these children, Odes and Ira died in infancy and Polly McKane who passed away about 40 years of age. The surviving children of this union are Josie Bernaix, of Pinckneyville; John of Tilden, Ginn, of Pinckneyville. The mother of these children died December 12, 1892 and he was again united in marriage on April 30, 1893 to Sarah Crider. To this union also seven children were born, two of these Oscar and Sophia dying in infancy. The surviving children are Brady of Pinckneyville; Wm. and Louis of Alton; Everett whose present location is not known and Mrs. Effie Place of Pinckneyville.
"Cullen" was known in Pinckneyville as a good fellow among his fellow workmen and was always ready to a favor and help those whom he could. One friend expressed the thought that: "If Cullen could do you a favor he did not wait for you to ask him but would suggest that he might be able to help you."
He had worked in the mines around Pinckneyville and had also served as city police.
Besides the above named children he is survived by his devoted wife, Sarah, who had cared for him most tenderly through several years of sickness. He was taken seriously ill about two weeks ago and was released from suffering by death on January 28, 1941 being at the time of his death 78 years 11 months and 16 days of age.
Besides the above mentioned relatives he is survived by 35 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and many other relatives and friends.
He was the last of a family of five brothers and one sister all of whom preceded him in death. Fifty-two years ago he professed faith in Christ as his personal Saviour and was baptized in the Galum Baptist Church.
Twilight and evening bell. and after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell when I embark. For though from out our bourne of time and place. The floods may bear me far. I hope to see my pilot face to face when I have crossed the bar.
