Selby was the youngest of nine children from the marriage of William Henry Clark and his wife Sarah Frances Hatcher (second marriage for both). Selby married Mattie B. Whitley about 1907, and together they were the parents of daughter Mary Olene Clark.

Selby was the proprietor of the Glasgow Flouring Mill, and owned mills in Summer Shade, Munfordville, and other locations. The day before his death, electricity from the Glasgow electric light works was run into the Glasgow Flouring Mill, for the purpose of operating the plant. Shortly after starting the machinery the next day, Selby noticed that a power pole was on fire. Upon investigating, Selby took hold of the guy wire to the burning pole, and was electrocuted.

Selby was 32 years of age at the time of his death, and was survived by the following: his wife Mattie and 18 month-old daughter Mary; his father, William Henry Clark of Hiseville; brothers Benjamin Arthur Clark of Glasgow, Henry Hinkley Clark and Porter Garvin Clark of Coral Hill; sisters Laura Ella (James G.) Williams, Ada Ethel (John) Vaughn, and Ida Irene (Roddy) Bagby, all of Coral Hill, and Eliza Cora (James A.) Williams of Hoopeston, Illinois; half-brothers Sam Clark of Arkansas, Nat Nichols of Coral Hill, and Tom Nichols of Summer Shade; half-sisters Mrs. Venie Fishback of Glasgow Junction, and Elizabeth Francis (William) Hazelip of Louisville.

He was preceded by his mother; brother Princeton Alonzo Clark; his step-mother Mattie (Moore) Clark; half-brothers William Jackson "Jack" Clark and James L. Nichols; and half-sisters Quintilla and Mary Clark.

Selby was said to be a genial, clever, kindly gentleman, popular with all who knew him. He was prominent in business circles and was known all over the area.
