She was first married to William Henry Puett. They had 3 children: Sarah Jane Puett Johnson, John Lafayette "Fate" Puett, and William Jehue Puett. When W. H. Puett died in the Civil War, she remarried to Augustus G. Crain. They had two sons, Jefferson Rado Crain and Thomas Milton Crain. Thomas Milton Crain died as as a baby (1872-1873).
My grandmother Merle and my Aunt Gertrude told me that their grandma, Mary Caroline, went by her middle name of Caroline. She was a strict grandma to her grandchildren, but a loving one. One of the stories my grandma told me, is of a new dress that Caroline bought for her when my grandma was a little girl. My grandma was only to wear the new dress "for good." Well, grandma wanted to wear her new dress all the time, and Caroline let her get away with it. Grandma told me many stories about her grandparents, Gus and Caroline Crain.
My great aunt Gertrude ordered Caroline's headstone, and was very upset when it arrived with "Carolina" on it.
OBITUARY:
The Eaton Herald - Mrs. A. G. Crain Died Saturday
Mrs. A. G. Crain died Saturday night after an illness of some time at the age of 84 years. Mrs. Crain was Miss Mary Caroline Whitaker and was born in North Carolina in 1833. She was twice married, the first time to Mr. Puett, and had two sons from this union. Later she was married to A. G. Crain, they having one son J. R. Crain, at whose house she died. She is also survived by her husband. Dr. Hall of the Baptist Church preached the funeral services, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Eaton cemetery.
I have the original portrait of Mary Caroline.
