Augustus Crain was the son of Andrew Jackson Crain and Narcissa Dill Crain.

He was the husband of Mary Caroline (Whitaker) Puett. They were married Dec. 16, 1868 in Cherokee County, North Carolina. James Kimsey was the Magistrate.

Augustus and Caroline had two children together: Jefferson Rado Crain, and an infant son Thomas Milton Crain, who died when he was just over a year old.

When Augustus and Caroline were married, she was a widow with three children: Sarah Jane, John "Fate" and William Puett. Augustus helped raise Caroline's children, and thought of them as his own.

Caroline's daughter, Sarah Jane Puett Johnson, died when she was a young mother with four children. Gus and Caroline took in those children also, and raised them.

When Augustus and Caroline's daughter-in-law, Sallie Gaines Crain died in 1908 in Olustee, Oklahoma, they stepped in again, and helped to care for Jeff and Sallie's three children.

Augustus was loved and called "Grandpa" by many Crain and Puett grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

When I was interviewing my grandmother Merle, she told me many wonderful stories about her grandpa, about how gentle he was and soft-hearted. She loved for him to brush her hair, because he did not pull on the tangles.

In his final years, he was cared for by Benjamin and Minnie Hoch, of Delta, Colorado.
