Born in the village / hamlet of Fourdan, he arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada on April 13, 1906 with his mother (Marie Mathurine, née Le Bouleh, 1864 - 1907) and five siblings aboard the SS Laurentian. They came to join their father, Joseph Dondo (1862 - 1923), who had preceded them a year earlier.

The family settled initially near Sainte-Rose-du-Lac / Makinak / Ochre River, MB on a homestead at NE-14-23-16-W1 (50.988691, -99.600725).

He lived in the Fisher Branch area for a time after his father's death, then in the area of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, MB. During his time there he did various jobs to earn a living, one of which was as an assistant to Jules Tinguely, the town's saddler and shoemaker. This entry in the NDL Centennial book includes an image of him in that role!

He is named on an Honour Roll in the Ochre River Community Hall, as documented in the local history volume "Between Mountain and Lake - A History of Ochre River Municipality 1885 - 1970 (1970)", which provides some details of the family's life in the area once organized as the RM of Ochre River:
