Raymond was born on Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes region of western New York state. His parents were Harold Raymond Ingraham and Ruth Monica (Pepper) Ingraham, who ran a large farm in the Bluff Point area, near Penn Yan. He was the eldest of the children. He had four younger daughters, Wilma, Ruth, Marguerite and Mary, and a younger brother, Warren, who died in infancy. He contracted polio and suffered with leg trouble caused by it for the remainder of his life. the 1930 census shows that he lived with his paternal grandparents for a while. Once grown, Raymond moved to North Carolina to work at Duke University. He married Leneore Anna Hampshire in Luzerne, Pennsylvania. They had no children.
