Born in the Finger Lakes region of western New York State, her father and mother were H. Ray Ingraham and Ruth Ingraham. She grew up on the farm they managed, and had three older sisters, Wilma, Ruth and Marguerite, and one older brother, Raymond. She was stricken by polio when she was young, as was her older brother Raymond, but she recovered with no apparent ill effects. Once grown and married, she eventually moved permanently to Florida, where her parents often spent the winters. She married Harry L. Staples (26 Sep 1925 - 19 Nov 2000), who was a WWII veteran, and they had seven children: Mariann (August 27, 1948), Monica (January 16, 1950), Judy (July 3, 1953), Steven (July 25, 1955), Debbie (December 19, 1957), Cindy (December 12, 1959), and Harry (September 29, 1962). She later was married to John C. Robb.
