Born circa 1755 to James and Jane Heedam Beckett in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. He emigrated to Pennsylvania just prior to the Revolutionary War. He served under Captain Andrew Long in 1st Battalion of Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment under Colonel Daniel Brodhead. He married Sarah Taylor, daughter of Major Robert Taylor, circa 1785 and they settled in Washington Co, Pennsylvania. In about 1803 the family left Pennsylvania and moved to Butler Co, Ohio. 30 Dec 1811 James and brother-in-law William Taylor bought 320 acres in Butler Co, OH from Samuel Dillon. Some documents say he died 14 years before Sarah, but he is found in the 1820 US Census as 1 male over 45 and DAR records give 1821 as his date of death. Greenwood Cemetery reports that he was removed from Hamilton grave yard in 1856 & re-interred in Greenwood.
