From Orphan to Beloved Parish Priest

Stanislaw was born in the city of Pinsk, a city in eastern Europe where the Pripyat River and the Pina River meet. Until 1939, Pinsk was part of Poland. By 1940 when Stanislaw was born, Pinsk was controlled by Soviet Russia. In mid-1941, Pinsk came under the control and occupation of Nazi Germany. In mid-1944, Pinsk came back under the control of Soviet Russia. Stanislaus’ father was an officer in the Polish Army. Mid- 1945, his father was captured by the Russian NKVD and was dead a month later; Stanislaus’ mother had died a month before his father died. Suddenly, Stanislaw was an orphaned five-year-old child. He and his three older brothers (Yevgeni b. 1933; Yezhi b. 1936; Anatol b. 1938) were moved by train into central-western Poland and reared in an orphanage run by Catholic nuns in Gniezno.

In 1959, Stanislaw joined the seminary in Gniezno. He completed in 1965. He received the sacrament of the order of the priesthood on November 21, 1965, in Gniezno, from the hands of Bishop Lucjan Bernacki. Father Podlewski began his priesthood as a vicar in the parish in Lekno (1965-1966). Then he was a vicar in the parishes of Miloslaw (1966-1967), Osiek (1967-1968), Wniebowzieciz NMP in Wagrowiec (1968), Saint Jakub in the Village of Wagrowiec (1968-1977), and Christ the King in Jaracin (1977-1982). In 1982 he was appointed administrator of the parish of Witaszyce, and after a few months the parish priest of St. James in Mogilno (until 1994) and Saint John in Mogilno (until 1998). From 1982 to 1985, he was deputy dean, and from 1985 to 1998 dean of the Mogilany deanery. In 1994, Archbishop Henryk Muszynski included Father Podlewski as a major canon to the Collegiate Chapter in Kruszwica. In 1998 he took over as parish priest at St. Michael the Archangel in Miescisko, where he was a priest for 16 years, until 2014. In 2014, Father Podlewski retired and settled in the Archdiocesan Priest of Elders in Gniezno.
