The Memorial of Stephen Gilbert Loyalist
That your Memorialist was an inhabitant of Ulster County, in the Province of New York, during the late War - that in Consequence of his Loyalty and Attachment to the British Constitution, he suffered great hardships during the time of the late Rebellion, having been deprived of the greatest Part of his Property which was not inconsiderable, on account of his Principles - That your Memorialist was twice in New York, during the War, on Government Service and uniformly aided and assisted the King's Cause, by risquing both Life and Property on all Occasions - That your Memorialist, in the year 1787, came to this country, the Incumberance of a large family and his private affairs having prevented him from coming at an earlier Period, with a Recommendation from Mr Cadwallader Colden, in which your Memorialists Character and Circumstances were particularily enumerated - That on producing this Testemonial from Mr Colden, to Stephen DeLancey Esq, Inspector of Loyalists, your Memorialist was recommended by him to the Hon'ble John Johnson - the Hon'ble John Collins Esq Commissioner for granting lands - That your Memorialist, after having satisfied these gentlemen concerning his Character, had encouragement to expect the same indulgence respecting lands, with those who came in at an earlier Period - That Mr Collins gave your Memorialist a Certificate specifying that he was intitled to nine hundred acres of land; four hundred of which he has received, viz Lot 29 first & second Concession, in the Township of Sydney - that in Consequence of his Provision for Himself, a wife & seven children, your Memorialist immediately began to improve said Lot. and sent for his Family and resides with them, at present on the Premises, and has cleared about Thirty acres of the same - your Lordship's Memorialist humbly begs that the remaining five hundred acres mentioned as due to him in Mr Collin's Certificate and your Lordships Bounty may be assigned to him in the unlocated Part of the Township of Sydney. And Your Lordships Memorialist, as in Duty bound.
