Francis A. "Spike" Doherty, of 220 North 21st in Kansas City, Kansas, a former Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Chief, passed away Thursday, August 30, at a nursing home at 9790 West 62nd in Merriam. He was 72. Mr. Doherty joined the Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department in 1924 and was promoted to captain in 1941. He was named a district chief in 1944 and served as chief of the department from 1952 to 1971. Mr. Doherty was a semi-pro boxer in his youth, fighting under the name of "Kid Doherty." He was a Navy veteran of World War I and was a charter member and the first commander of the Armourdale American Legion Post. Mr. Doherty, a lifelong Kansas City, Kansas, resident, was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Cathedral.

He was survived by his wife, Mrs. V. Murial Doherty; two sons, William F. Doherty of Leawood and Art Berry of Gravois Mills, Missouri; two daughters, Mrs. Muriel Mellott of Mission and Mrs. Lois Hardin of Overland Park; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The Rosary was prayed on Friday night at the Highland Park Chapel, where friends called during the evening. Services were held on Saturday morning at St. Peter's Catholic Cathedral. Burial was in Highland Park Cemetery. The family requested memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association.
