Montgomery County Wills, Book No. 5, page 311

Oct 23, 1754-Snow Good Intent, Capt. Lasly, from Amsterdam, last from Gospert-inhabitants from Hesse, Hanau, the Palatinate, and a few from Switzerland. Seven Roman Catholics. The ship manifest recorded him as Johan Christian Scheidt. Only one other person with this spelling was recorded in Rupp's "Thirty Thousand Names". That was a Christian Scheidt in 1763. Later records of him are unknown.
Possibly he returned to Europe and then returned with his family.

He settled in Montgomery County, Pa. and was a member of the Lutheran denomination of Old Goshenhoppen church. He remained in this area his entire life. In October 28, 1760 he married Marie Elizabeth May. His name is written in the Old Goshenhoppen register as Sheitt. All records of him after his marriage gave his family as Sheid/Scheid, until just before his death, when he and family were written Scheidt.
Some of his descendants later became Shaid or Shade. Only grandson Jacob 1792 retained the original spelling which continued to date.

He served as a quartermaster in the Revolutionary War, 2nd co., 5th bat. PC MI, Capt. Gable's company.

The first recorder of deeds was Augustus Muhlenberg. He
was appointed on the 21st of September 1784, by the Executive Council, and on the same day was appointed register of wills. The office of county commissioner
appears to have been organized in 1790. No records can be found of an earlier date. The following-named persons constituted the board at that date: Christian Scheid, Nathan Potts, John Mann. The earliest county treasurer of which we find record was Isaac Markley. Directors of the poor were not county officers at the date Montgomery County was organized. At this period the State had no Governor, no State Senate. The several States were acting under the Articles of Confederation, adopted November 15, 1777. The Constitution of the United States had not then been adopted, and the first Congress did not assemble until 1789.

Reading Adler Newspaper, Reading, Pa. Jun 1821
"Scheid- Died Friday the 15th of June in Sumneytown, Montgomery County, Christian Scheid aged 86 years, 6 months
He is survived by a widow and six children. He was a very wealthy and esteemed citizen and one of the first commissioners of said county."

He was the earliest immigrant with this name whose tombstone has been photographed and known to exist in America. Circa 1850 there were many immigrants coming to America with the name Scheid and Scheidt.

The widow mentioned in his obituary was his second wife, Barbara (Rose) Faber, widow of Rev. Theobald Faber. Christian and Barbara had no children. Christian's first wife and mother of his children was Marie Elizabeth May, daughter of Simon and Susanna Mei/May
