Captain Mervyn Richardson was born in Ireland, and joined the 4th Irish Dragoons at the age of 17 on June 1, 1790, as noted on the Muster Roll. He was promoted from Private to Corporal in 1783. In 1794, he married Jane McRae in Coventry, Warwick. In 1798, he was promoted to Adjutant of the 4th Dragoon Guards., & in 1799, he was promoted to QuarterMaster. After that, he personally signed each of the monthly Muster Rolls, and they can be found at the Archives in Kew. In 1799, he was promoted to Cornet, & in 1803, promoted to Lieutenant. In 1812, he received his last promotion, to Captain. In 1816, the last of their nine children was born in Ireland, & he retired in 1816. In 1818, he was appointed as Adjutant to the 1st West York Militia, & stayed in that role apparently until he died in 1846. He was first buried in St. Paul's Church basement, in Leeds, but in 1915, St. Paul's church was torn down, & the bodies transferred. No specific record of transfer was found, but his wife Jane was listed as being buried at Beckett St. Cemetery, so that is where this memorial is located.
