John Templeton Richardson was the fourth child & second son of Captain Mervyn Richardson & Jane McRae Richardson. The family moved frequently due to his father's career in the 4th Dragoon Guards; he was listed as born in Ireland, and his eight siblings were born all over the U.K.
He obtained his degree from the Royal College of Surgeons London.
In 1820 at the age of 17 he was apprenticed to Richard Charlesworth Battyes of Leeds for 5 years.
He attended Guys Hospital for 6 months; he was examined and approved by Mr Robinson on 26th May 1825.
He practiced at the Leeds lying-in Hospital.
He married Mary Anne Oxley at St. Giles Church, Pontrefract (Wakefield District) Yorkshire, on 29 September 1825. He may have had offices in different towns. In the 1830 Leeds Directory of Tradesmen: Richardson John, surgeon, 30, Commercial street.
On the 1841 Census of Askern, West Riding Yorkshire, John Richardson 35, Occ: Surgeon, b. Ireland, wife Mary 30, not b. Yorks, & 9 children: Susanna 14, Cathrine 13, Mervyn 12, Elizabeth 11, William 10, Arthur 8, Archibald 5, Thomas 5, Mary 11 mos.
On the 1851 Leeds, YKS, Askern parish, John Richardson, 48, b. Ireland British Subject. Occ: Surgeon, "M.R.C.S f.L.S.A. in private practice" (See note: stands for Member of the Royal College of Surgeons). Wife Mary Ann 45, b. London, Children: Susanna 24, Occ: House Work, b. Yorksh. Pontrifact; Catharine 22, b. London; Achmuty 18, b. YKS Askern as were the rest of the kids: Archibald 15, Scholar, Mary Ann 10, Robert 9, Sarah 8, Rachel 7, and Ann 6.
They had fifteen children in total, but several did not survive to adulthood.
He resided with his family at Campsall and the last address was 42 Campsall Rd, Askern Yorkshire.
He died, sadly, at the age of 50. Death Certificate obtained for John Templeton Richardson: Death occurred: 25 September 1853, Askern, Age 50 years, Occupation: Surgeon
Cause of Death: Bronchitis, 5 days, certified
Signature, description and residence of informant: John Fox Oxley, present at the death; Askern. When registered: 28 Sept, 1853.
According to the FHL Film #436895, he was buried at Campsall on 28 September, 1853. The St. Mary Magdalene Churchyard is not mentioned, but that is the most likely place for his burial.
