The Wellington Leader February 29, 1964

Royce A. Walters, 44, of Cucuta, Colombia, South American, who spent his youth in Collingsworth County, was one of five persons killed Thursday, February 22, in a place crash in the Magdelina Valley near Bogota, Columbia.

Mr. Walters was in charge of the pipeline for Standard Oil Company in Columbia, and he and his family were to have returned to Texas march 1. He was en route to Bogota to arrange for passage to El Paso when the leased private plane crashed, killing all five persons aboard.

Wellington friends have learned that the crash occurred when the plane ran into bad weather conditions in a high mountainous area.

Born at Ryan, Ok, May 8, 1923, Mr. Walters came to Collingsworth County with his parents while still small. He attended school at Kelley, Wilnulcer and Quail and was graduated from Wellington High School in 1941. He entered the U.S. Army shortly after that, along with C.A. Winton and W.M. Radford of Wellington, and Jim Chappell of Memphis, and served in the 614th Engineers, attached to General George Patton's Third Army. This unit followed the invasion forces into France, then through Luxembourg, Holland, Belgium, Germany, and ended the war in Southern France. Their work was to build and repair airstrips and roads.

He was discharged from the service in December 1945.

A short time after the end of the war, he was married to Miss Helen McGill. They made their home in Pasco, Washington, then Salt Lake City, Utah before going to Colombia. He had been with Standard Oil Company 20 years. His last visit here was about three years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Helen Walters; a daughter and four sons: Thomas J. Walters of Tucson, AZ; Donald L. Walters of Fort Hood; Buster A. Walters of Fort Benning, GA; and Joe Walters of Cucuta, Colombia; and Mrs. Joy Knight of Houston.

Other survivors are three sisters and a brother: Mrs. D. J. Collins of Lake Jackson; Mrs. F. E. Derryberry of Port Lavaca; Mrs. M B. Haskell of Germany and Thomas J. Walters of Amarillo.
