According to "The Descendants of Nancy Kerlin & John Lanning of New Jersey & Somerset Co., Pennsylvania," which was self-published by Ethel Albin in 1999, Elsa Allen was the second wife of James Lanning of Somerset Co., PA. James Lanning brought his first family to Perry Co., OH around 1833, according to the tax records. The obituary for his daughter Elsie (Lanning) Donley says that he settled in Oreville in 1825 where he was one of the first white settlers within the territory later embraced by Hocking Co. He was in Perry Co., OH in the 1840 census. According to their 1850 census, two of the children, Silas and Janet, were born in Virginia. Lanning researcher Ethel Albin said the family spent some time in Virginia/West Virginia before moving to Perry Co., OH.

Mary (Phillipi) Lanning, the first wife of James Lanning, died around 1841/1842. There were 14 children from that marriage. James & Elsa (Allen) Lanning were married by about 1844 when their daughter Nancy was born. James & Elsa had ten children: Nancy, Catharine, David, Elsie, Elizabeth, William, Morgan, Lucinda, Alfred, and Benjamin. James and Elsa were farming in the 1860 Falls Twp., Hocking Co., OH census. They were still farming in the 1870 Falls Twp., Hocking Co. OH census where the census taker mistakenly listed their surname as "Leonard."

According to the Hocking Co., OH death records, Elsa died of paralysis in Falls Twp. I suspect that she was buried in the nearby Old Gore Cemetery, but don't have proof of that.

After Elsa passed away in 1877, James Lanning and the younger children appear to have gone to live with various family members. The children became involved with the problematic coal mining culture. In 1880. old James Lanning and teenage son Alfred Lanning were living with son David Lanning and his family in the Falls Twp., Hocking Co., OH census. Old James Lanning likely died 1880-1900. In 1900, James & Elsa's 42 yr. old son Morgan Lanning was living with brother William Lanning and his family in the Jobs, Ward Twp., Hocking Co., OH census.
