Jimmy was born to Matthew Green Roles and Cora Catherine Cox. He had 1 older brother Lonnie, 1 older sister Neva and 3 younger sisters Myrtle, Vera and Jewelle. His mother died when he was almost 12. When he was about 16 or 17 he quit school for a while to go to work to help support the family. His dad worked out of town during the week and only came home on weekends so Jimmy was responsible for taking care of his younger sisters. He was finally able to go back to school and graduated a few months before he turned 20 and he was the senior class president. After graduation, he worked in Washington D.C., Detroit, Milwaukee and finally settled in Gary, Indiana. His youngest sister Jewelle came to live with him and finished high school there and his sister Vera also lived with them for a while. In 1943 he was drafted into the Army and ended up in Honolulu as the company clerk for a Signal Corps unit. He was discharged in Nov. 1945 and on Jan. 23, 1946 married Elaine May Smith whom he had met in 1943 on a train. They had written to each other for almost 3 years while he was in the Army and she was dancing on USO all over the United States! After their marriage they moved to southern California where he spent the rest of his life. He worked for the May Company for several years and then Adohr milk farms for 32 years. He had 2 daughters Melinda and Laury and loved nothing better than his 7 grandkids. We sure miss you Gramps!
