The Very Rev. Bonaventure Oberst, C.P., 67, former vice general of the Passionist Fathers at Rome, died in Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio, at 10:40 p.m. Monday. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. Oberst of Owensboro, and had been a member of the Passionist congregation 48 years. He had been stationed in various monasteries in this country and abroad, his last assignment, which he took in 1946, having been as superior in Bethany, near Jerusalem. Owing to unsettled conditions in that area, he was returned to this country and had been stationed at Holy Cross Monastery, Cincinnati. He took his Passionist vows in 1901 and was ordained in St. Ann's Church, Normandy, Missouri, May 29, 1907, by the late Cardinal Glennon. He was provincial consultor of the western province of Passionist Fathers from 1923 to 1926 and then served five years as superior at Maria Shutz, near Vienna, Austria.
A requiem high mass will be read at the monastery in Cincinnati at 10 a.m. Thursday, after which the body will be removed to Louisville, where the funeral mass will be read at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Retreat, Louisville. Burial will be in the Passionist cemetery.
Surviving are two sisters, Misses Josephine and Mary Oberst; five brothers, Andrew A., Herman S., and Capt. F.X. Oberst, Owensboro; Joseph L., Atlanta, Georgia; and Eugene G. of Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
