Newburn Roland Wilkes, 81, of Metter died Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Westwood Nursing Center in Statesboro. The Montgomery County native has lived in Metter since 1985 and was an Army veteran serving in the Korean Conflict. Newburn began working for Georgia Power Company in 1965 and retired in 1992 as a lineman. Being a jack- of- all- trades, he could fix anything. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. After retirement, he enjoyed meeting the group at Hardees and later on taking Shelby to Burger King. He was preceded in death by his parents, Randall Otis and Luta Humphrey Wilkes and a sister, Thurla Wilkes Smith.

Survivors are his wife of 28 years, Frances Daniels Wilkes of Metter; two sons, Terry L. (Debra) Wilkes of Tybee Island and Ronnie Wilkes (Melissa) of Reidsville; two step-daughters, Susan Fulmer of Metter and Sandra (Bobby) Layson of LaGrange; three grandchildren, Heather Brown, Alex Wilkes and Ben Wilkes; a great granddaughter, Hailey Brown; four step-grandchildren; and five step-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, 2:00 PM, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Rev. Johnny Beasley officiating. Burial will be in the Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday evening 5:30-7:30 PM at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Tommy Kingery, Hut Kingery, Trevor Raburn, Douglas Griffin, Buddy Sammons and Doyle Waller.
