When 10 years of age he moved with his parents to Jackson County, IN. Learned the carpenter trade. In 1843, he married Minerva S. Umbarger and unto them were born five children. Only one of this place survives: Mr. L. H. Brannen. Mrs. Brannen died in 1854 and he never remarried. In 1850, he moved to Tama County, Iowa and located in Toledeo. In 1864, he moved to Tama. In 1874, he became City Marshall of Tama. He was elected Justice of the Peace of which office he held until his death. After the funeral, he was laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetry.
